Death by Chocolate…what a name! This recipe has been around for a while and yet it is one that cooks return to time and again. Tons of rich chocolate flavor accented by the crunch of salted nuts, deep chocolate cake pieces and sweet gooey cream. What’s not to like?

Valentine’s Day is almost here and some of us still need that quick chocolate dessert for a group.(Are you invited to a potluck staff lunch or dinner too?)  We’re continuing our Valentine’s Day celebrations tomorrow with friends, so this Death by Chocolate is a perfect dessert to whip up for those who love chocolate as much as we do. You can serve this as a trifle (use a punch bowl, as it makes lots) or prepare in a deep rectangular lasagna pan. This recipe will easily serve 12 – 15 people or more for dessert.

Thanks to my friend, Reatha, and her daughter, Karin , for the recipe. Karin is the owner of the Da*De*O New Orleans Diner and Bar on Whyte Ave. in Old Strathcona in Edmonton… a great place to get together with friends for a casual evening out or the perfect lunch.

 Death by Chocolate:

1 chocolate cake mix (I use a devil’s food cake mix)or a prepared chocolate cake from the bakery department at your local grocer

4 packages chocolate mousse

4 Score bars

1 can salted nuts (your favorite)

1 tin caramel topping

1 container Cool Whip

Preparation:

Bake cake mix according to directions. Cool. Cut cake into 1 inch pieces. (If using prepared cake, cut into 1 inch pieces.)

Use a large punch bowl or 2 large glass bowls.

Chop chocolate bars and nuts coarsely  in a food processor or blender. Set aside.

Mix mousse as directed on the package. Set aside.

Assemble Dessert:

  1. Layer cake pieces in bottom of bowls.
  2. Top with mousse.
  3. Sprinkle coarsely chopped score bars and nuts over top. Reserve a few for decorating the top of the dessert.
  4. Pour caramel topping in thin strips across the nuts and chocolate.
  5. Evenly spread Cool Whip over the top.
  6. Sprinkle reserved score bits and nuts on top. Cover with plastic wrap.
  7. Chill until ready to serve… at least 4 hours or overnight.
